Under tank heater?
I just got a 40g breeder tank (not going to breed). I'm in the process of setting it up for my first future snake.
Anyway, my question is: what size under tank heater do I need for it?
It is 36" long x 18" wide

Most folks try to cover 1/3 or so of the bottom of the tank. So a 12x12 inch would work nicely. A thermostat is very important as well to control your heat source.

Reptile basics has very good heat tape that works well and is enexpensive.
12" Heat Tape
THGHeat Wire/Clip/Insulator Set: Reptile Products You Can Trust | Reptile Basics Inc
You can order a foot of the 12" heat tape and a cord/insulator set. They will install the cord set for you for .99 cents by selecting cord install in checkout.
I used these and they work great. Definitely need a thermostat with the heat tape as it can get very hot without temperature control.

Re: Under tank heater?
Also for a heat pad that you can run without a thermostat is the ultratherm heat pad. They will only reach 90-95 degrees surface temp without temperature control. Although I always suggest using a thermostat for safety reasons.
