Monitors and veggie diets?

I have seen a few occasions where savaging monitors eat fruit left overs. And i am curious as to why this might happen. I am only seeing it in "trash" monitors, or ones that are feeding off garbage. but have seen it a few times, have pictures as well.

Is this normal?

Re: Monitors and veggie diets?

Hi, there are several species that are known to feed on vegetation/some fruit on a regular basis, others have been recorded taking it on occasion.
I think in Taiwan you will have subspecies of Water monitors (V. salvator), Bengal monitors (V. bengalensis).
Perhaps sometimes it`s accidental ingestion, or maybe the fruit has the scent of a meat product?
Can you put a few photos up?

Re: Monitors and veggie diets?

I've only heard of a few ( very few ) species that eat fruit sometimes, most are strictly carnivorous.
