What kind of baby snake is it?
Hi! I never was a "snake" person before but have become fond of my new baby. My stepson found 3 eggs in our yard when removing some old logs. He had destroyed 2 before I found out & I took the last one from him. I doubted it would hatch but tucked it away in a plastic container for a month. To my surprise a week ago I found my new baby... Already getting tamer & letting me hold it for longer periods. I'm guessing it's a rat snake...what do you think? How do I know when to feed it? The eyes went blue 2 days ago but now are shiny black again.

Re: What kind of baby snake is it?
It looks to me to be a baby black racer. Does it have a checkered belly?

Your snake is about to shed.If possible it's best to release him back into the wild.

Toby is doing awesome by the way, just as ornery and flighty as ever, and man can that thing hammer the mice.

Re: What kind of baby snake is it?
Thanks everyone for the information, going to research a black racer now. It did shed today, came home and was amazed to find the whole skin! I could release it back into the wild but hate the thought of an owl, osprey, raccoon or possum getting a hold of it. We do live at the lake and woods around 3 sides of us. Going to try to feed it a "pinky" tomorrow.

Re: What kind of baby snake is it?
Thanks...I thought so but Toby looked much browner than Willie T. (our racer's new name). Since he shed (could be a she?) he does look more brown in his pattern.
We tried to feed him a pinky yesterday but he was not interested at all. Should we try a cricket or small lizard?
