New Snake Owner!

Hello everyone! I'm going to be getting my first snake (Brooksi X Goini Kingsnake) from a breeder tomorrow. I've owned a bearded dragon for seven years now and I'm looking forward to a new addition. I've done lots of basic research on caring for one from the internet though I would still love to hear some advice. I'm going to post a picture of my initial cage as well. THANKS!

That is to big of an uth. I don't know what size that is but if it's the smallest I would use only half of it to get a heating range but other than that it looks fine

Are you using a thermostat? What are you using to read the hotside?

Re: New Snake Owner!

The cage is 12x8. I have a heat strip under the cage which reads 90 degrees on the plastic with an inch of substrate. I do have questions for you all too. I got him almost a week ago now. On day three I fed him a frozen pinkie, left for an hour, came back and he ate it. I just tried to see if I could start handling him to tame him down and trust me but he got pissed real quick. Tips? Sorry for being an amateur. :P

Congrats on the new addition Grotick. I'm glad he ate for you. You may want to feed him a couple more times and give him another week or two before handling him. He's probably just getting settled in to his new home. I got my MBK a month ago and she's just getting comfortable in her surroundings. My Cal King settled in about 2 weeks after I got him. I know it's hard to not handle him but you just have to be patient a little while longer. Best wishes.

Re: New Snake Owner!

!UPDATE!

It's been about three weeks now and my kingsnake is still very sketchy. If he sees me at all regardless of the circumstances he darts away like a crazed man. It doesn't even matter if I'm 20 feet away from the cage. The only way I'm going to be able to handle him is if I start emptying out his cage looking for him which will probably get him even more defensive and nip. He's eating good still though and seems healthy. He just doesn't wanna be my friend. : (

Patience is key. Seems you haven't been harassing him much which is good. You can give him short handling sessions and it might help calm him down, but there is no guarantee he ever will. Handle him for 15 minutes or so every few days and he may stop with the sketchiness, especially as he ages.

Re: New Snake Owner!

Mission "get Pete onto makeshift snake hook" was a success; he's calmed down a lot. Instead of getting aggressive he just tries to sneak away under all his channels of hidey spots throughout the cage. Tomorrow I'd like to see if he will make his way down the "snake hook" and onto my arm. I'd honestly like to just get bit already to see how it feels lol. It can't be worse then a hornet sting. Thanks for all the advice! It was used wisely!
