i found this awesome garter under a railroad tie i believe its melanistic but not 100% what do you think?

I would say it has some extra melanin, but the true melanistic garter snakes are silk black with zero markings.

The melanistic Sirtalis have a white patch under the chin, the melanistic Vagrans (wandering garter) snakes have all black everything.
