New project suggestions

Ok guys, so my collection hasn't exactly been amazing lately (no stable housing situation, was unsure where I was going to be at in a few months) but now I have my own place, pets allowed and moving in tomorrow. I bought the amyae pair to focus on them with just a few pet snakes, however my female died. I'm going to keep the male but now I have no breeding pairs of anything and would like a new project.

My budget is like....600 ideally , 800 max and I'd like to get something thats of breeding age so keep that in mind price wise.

I've been browsing the classifieds but nothing has stood out to me, so I thought I'd get a few suggestions.

Sorry about your amyae. There are too many possibilities to really suggest anything. I personally am not a fan of breeding to produce morphs, so if I were looking for a project I would probably look into increasing genetic diversity and fitness in some group. But more realistically I could easily see myself dumping $600 into a cool enclosure.

I would have to agree mostly here.

What is your experience in breeding ?
Reason for breeding, e.g. Fun, morphs, profit ?
Would you prefer lizards or snakes ?

I myself since I have never done any breeding am setting for Kingsnake breeding this fall. I hope they don't eat each other. LOL

I don't like morphs for the most part. Never buy 'morphs' and I'm not looking to make any money, or even break even. I just have OCD when I have too many loose end animals and no main focus. 600 Dollars would make a very cool enclosure, but 1. I'm not a handy man, and 2. I have nothing large enough that needs to be housed in a 600 dollar enclosure atm

One thing you may want to look at is the market itself. What does the market need more of? Or, What do you see too much of?
I have a tendency to try to work with hard to produce species or species that other keepers have a hard time with. I learn as much as I can about said species then try different techniques to try to achieve success.
sure it can be very discouraging but, when you do achieve success.....it's so much more rewarding than hatching a ball python or a carpet, etc....

Plus, if you can find a nitch with a tougher species....you have a much easier time moving them and creating a name for yourself in the industry.

Of course you might not be interested in any of that but, if you are....that's the way to go.

Haha...well, that's your decision but, there are a few things out there that are un common and, not very many people working with.

As far as snakes....the Savu python is a wonderful species that's a little bit tricky. They stay small (4 feet or so) and, are really hearty animal. They are a little tougher to breed than say a spotted or Childrens python so you won't see as many of them in the market because of that.

Lizards.....that's a good one. maybe some of the lechie species?

Anyway, if you have the animals....might as well breed and try to make somethin....ya know.

I just recently talked my guitar player into buying a pair of animals. He has a real bad guitar collecting problem.....I told him if he had at least one pair of animals that breed.....that's a new 1500/2000 guitar every year! Haha.

I don't like looking at my animals as "money makers" but, I sure don't mind if they "make me money". Haha.

I like the savus, a while back I planned to buy some and got jungle carpets instead lol ... Anything else? D'alberts would be sweet , but I doubt I'll see any success with them.

My buddy Tom Keogan has both golds and black white lips.
The golds are fairly easy but, Tom is one of only 3 people in the US to hatch blacks.

They're terrifying animals when they're adults though. haha.

There seems to be a shift towards the Antaresia complex all across the hobby....but, that means there will be a boat load of those in a few years time.

It's hard to find a species that isn't "played out" but, in the end....it comes down to what you like and, what you see yourself working with.

Easy to breed ? Or to keep? I love the D'alberts. Almost everyone does haha
I havent noticed an increase in hype with childrens or stimsons or w.e , maybe its just too early to notice. My current collection isn't really even a collection anymore. I got rid of my jungles, my beardies (just pets), kings, even my fish tank. All I have now for snakes is my GTP :\

My wife and son are overseas waiting for visas, so I travel too much to keep anything. However my lawyer said we only have the interview and its done (so 1 month ish ). Andddd I got my own place so I now have time, room , and money (kinda).

Yeah, since the Antaresia book came out....there has been a lot more interest in them and, a lot more of them available on kingsnake etc.

Before, nobody really cared about them....but, now you have the morphs popping up, etc...so of course, they're going to become more popular.

That's good your life is getting settled. That kinda stress can be a killer! Haha.

Your tellin me lol I've seen my 5 month old son for a total of 10 days :-/. They told me the visa stuff was going to be 5-6 months total......1 year ago and 6 g's in tickets later. Can't wait to finally get settled for once. i like the blacks alot more, but dont have a few g's lying around atm.

If nothing jumps out to you then just wait it out. Don't rush into something.

Think about species and what you'd prefer to work with. See if your passion is lizards or snakes. Go from there. Is it agamids or geckos? Pythons or boas? Colubrids? Anoles?

Take your time is the key.
