The papers only matter to me because I want a full blood puppy. I don't want other bloodlines taking away from the good qualities of the Rott. If I had a trustworthy person then papers wouldn't be necessary. But if I knew a trust worthy person with the puppies I wouldn't have needed to post this.

Re: Looking for a puppy
My golden ate his papers. We never got them filed, the cat knocked them off the desk and he took it from there.

Re: Looking for a puppy
Also for those of you who think I shouldn't be asking about puppies on here... I was just under the impression that this was a site focused on helping and educating its members. Also I didn't think it was too much to ask if someone just happened to know some useful information for me. Thank you to everyone that posted something useful.

Re: Looking for a puppy
LOL, yea there's a ton of OT stuff in here. It's called General Discussion after all.
I'm not sure if this place has changed lately or if I'm just hyper-sensitive to it for some reason.

Re: Looking for a puppy
Brently, remember that papers doesn't necessarily mean health. Getting puppies registered with AKC or CKC for a breeder is fairly easy. I'd go with a Rottweiler rescue organization. I posted two Rottweiler rescue organizations in Arizona a few pages back.
Also, I never said it was wrong or that you should'nt post about looking for a puppy... just that it was weird to see it on a reptile forum.

Re: Looking for a puppy
I don't think there is anything wrong with asking a question like that because you're right that's what we're here for
as for the replies you received regarding shelter animals whether you want to go in that direction you want. You asked a question and that was the answer I'm sorry if it wasn't what you were looking for. Good Luck

Nope it really hasn't changed. We all need to find our place on here. Sometimes we have to get our rough edges knocked off and sometimes we need to just accept they are there. Personally I don't think we always use tact on here but show me someone who always uses tact in rl. We can all get along fine somedays and other days we might just he a little cranky. We call ourselves a large slightly dysfunctional family. Well we sure act like one. We just news to tough it out when times get thin. Honestly I find a pm is a good life line.

OK, so you want pure blood lines but you have to be very careful, because, you don't want to pay the $1000 or more but want papers, then your looking at backyard breeders, which DO NOT test thier breeders or have them certified.
ie: An actual Rotti breeder would have had both mamma and pappa's hips "certified" (they should SHOW you the certifacation) this certifacation shows that neither mother or father (and sometimes grandparents) of the pups never had hip problems. however, none of this is cheap and you will be paying around $1000 for that pup. But it IS worth it because to get a pure rotti from untested lines will be far more expensive in the future (hip surgery is about $1600/hip)
a backyard breeder will not have checked thier lines, or had the parents certified. They may only charge $800 for the pup, but to them it's pure profit because they didn't check the parents out.
As someone who has worked with dogs for the past 20 yrs, I have to say if you want the pure blood, pay the $$ for the pup who's parents have been tested, it will save your heart and wallet tons in the future. Also please be aware that pure bred rotti's commonly get bone cancer and have to be euthanized once it becomes too painful.

Re: Looking for a puppy
Its funny if you are looking for a reptile. Its preached [very loud sometimes] that captive bred is the only way to go if you want to know where they came from, quality, healthy, and well cared for critters.[I agree].Enter the dog world and its take on the mix breeds and unkown origins.I own three papered rotties.Raised them from pups.I like the fact if I have problems I can go to the breeder and find out the history of the line.I feel for the dogs in shelters.I do the same as feel for the reptile rescues.I just think there should not be a double standard because of fur.

Re: Looking for a puppy
Personally I don't care for big breeders no matter what type of animal is involved. I don't mind doing business with small time breeders.

Re: Looking for a puppy
You say you want papers, but you don't want to pay for quality. What you WILL getting is a dog from unproven parents. This means the parents haven't received either working or conformation titles, and the littler hasn't been tested for genetic abnormalities.
Why are these titles important?
Conformation titles means that the dog is built properly. It means that the animal is not deformed, and shows no signs of genetic problems such as hip and/or elbow displasia, over or under bite, bowed legs, etc.
Working titles say say two things: 1. The dog is physically healthy enough to perform the task it was bred for, and 2. the dog is mentally healthy enough to perform the task it was bred for.
Buying a pure bred puppy for cheap, you WILL be buying from back yard breeders. All those papers mean is that the dog is purebred. It doesn't mean it's not inbred. It doesn't mean the parents don't have health problems. It doesn't mean there is no aggression in the bloodlines (contrary to popular belief, a Rotweiler should NOT be aggressive). It doesn't mean that the puppies have any sort of health guarantee. Etc. These animals are often poorly bred and have health and mental issues.

Re: Looking for a puppy
All three of my cats are rescues but my dog is from a breeder she's a pure golden retriever like Norm has. I am looking for a puppy in shelters around now so my dog can have a friend though but I must say I'm still looking for a pure bred if I can find a puppy. IMO as long as you're getting a younger dog you won't have to worry about it having behavioral. For instance my one cat is 2 1/2 years old and he was abused at his previous home we've had him for almost a year now and he's just finally warming up to us but he's afraid of everyone else. An uncle of mine has a dog that is the same way too. They are the most gentle animals I've been around just very timid.
