Re: New salamander and newts!

Happy to say my two fire salamanders are still alive and kicking nine months later!

Sorry I couldn't get a picture of both- they are almost always hidden.

Re: New salamander and newts!

They are the coolest creatures ever swolek! I am learning too, and, unfortunately, have lost some in the process. I know more now, and hope to keep the ones remaining alive. Florida is not the best place to keep a lot of them, they require cool temperatures and some of them require a lot of moisture (not too good with central air).

Re: New salamander and newts!

My niece (she is older) is looking at getting some salamanders -pref fire- (I would be the primary care taker -)

I have a couple questions though-
Do tubs work, or are glass / vivs a must?
Can pairs co exist, or are they solitary?
-low temps should not be a problem-

I don't know why tubs wouldn't work. I would watch the moisture/humidity. My glass tank developed mold and I had to take all the soil out. It was completely saturated and would not dry out.

I have a pair of fire salamanders and a pair of Kweichow newts. There may be some competition for food, otherwise they are fine together.

No, low temps are not a problem.
