negative! my fish-tank that i'm currently using (his new cage is currently being finished) keeps 50% with just cypress mulch and a towel on top. Now, this could very well be because I have a pain in the rear who spills his water daily, but even so.

o.o how do you teach them to use paper? Pajamas just curls up on top of it, which i know is a good thing, but i know he wants to hide sometimes...

In my quest for a better substrate I tried everyone on paper and every single snake I own would hide under the paper.

You can't "teach" them like you would train a dog. They'll figure it out, mine do when I use paper towels and when I was at Travis's place on Saturday I don't know how many of his were under the paper, but it was quite a few.
OP, drop the hot side temp, never over 90 unless the snake is sick, when I provide hotspots I keep it at 88-90.

Do you nit think its strange to have 90 on one side and only 70 ish a foot away? I doubt its measured accurately. The cool side sounds too cool. Unless the room its in is like 60 or something I don't see it being that spread over a small viv.

Re: Taking away a growing retics hide/ feeding issues
Thanks everyone....well the rat was small and I was in the room when he ate just missed the feeding, basically the rat was a weanling and cannot harm my snake he was much bigger. If it was a medium rat I would be right there watching. Since it was a small meal im gonna offer him anothger tomorrow. I willb bump the cool side up into the low 80s is that a good temp? I think it does have something to do with my temps...now since he did eat with no hides in....should I still put his hides back in...I mean hes 6' already maybe time to get him used to the no hides this? And yes, a tank can siffice a growing retic as long as you provide the heat and humidity. I never had a shedding problem. Once he grows a little more I will egt his his larger vision tank

Depends on room temp, ventilation, and heating device, it could be surprising, it could be unsurprising.

Just regular old newspaper on top of the cypress (newspaper only= sopping wet newspaper and an inch of water in the bottom every day). i don't mind it, i just think it's strange that he won't use it to hide xD

Re: Taking away a growing retics hide/ feeding issues
a little weird, especially if its on top of cypress. Whatever though, snakes do their own thing, take my male SD for example, he'll go a few days where he's always in his hide, then he'll go a few days where he's never in it. Never know what he's doing but he seems to be doing just fine so I don't stress it.
You're talking about Pajamas right? How old is he?

Not really weird at all. He just doesn't feel the need to hide. Some do, and some don't. He just feels really secure where he is.
He's probably like "I'm a boss!"
