Unfortunately showing off a bitey snake to scare/initmidate people is one of the reasons that people want snakes banned form public ownership. Much more constructive to show people that snakes are not to be scared off, arent aggressive (more likely defensive bites than aggressive bites) as a rule and can be great pets for people of all ages.

Very pretty snake you got there tho.

over in the uk,a few of my fellow carpet keepers and i have found aspen tends to be a very dusty substrate and can lead to respiritory problems

i know its not for everyone but i use newspaper substrate

i liked the visual effect of aspen but as said found it too dusty to work with

I am sorry if you took it that way it was meant as a joke. I dont like scaring people. nor do I let him bite me just for kicks. is he bitey, yes but I dont go out of my way to scare people with him. I am still trying to break him of his agressive nature but he doesnt seem to want to kick it which is fine

Well in my experience with many snakes over the years I have dealt with aggressive snakes and I know some wont settle down. that being the case you just come to accept that it happens and deal with it and know that some snakes are going to be prettier to look at.

I've tamed down wild caught snakes in the past... its not hard. Some refuse, but thats only happened once and we could still hold it by hand, just needed to be careful. (was a W/C retic)

I apologise in that case - i didnt realise that you were joking. You are fairly new to this forum and i dont "know" your sense of humour or how you express yourself yet.

If i can offer some advice - add in a few smilies and lol's when you are joking until we get to know you and it will lessen any misunderstandings

Part of hook training that i use with my SD Retic is to touch the snake lightly on the top of the head, applying minimal pressure, this "turns off" his feeding response (i then can reach in and get him by hand but you would normally then use the hook to remove from the viv).

That is the only tip i have picked up from reading on here - luckily he has a really obvious FEED mode and RELAXED mode so i can judge when i need to use the hook.

Retic relaxed mode looks like a rat snake lol, REALLY active.
Retic feed mode is jaw hanging open following you intently with its face ready for food, then once food is present it FLYS at it faster then you can react and clamps down on anything it hits lol.

well stephan, you seem to know a lot about hook training how about you enlighten us on how to do it. all I have found about hook trainning is to tap them on the head with the hook to turn off the feed mode. problem is that doesnt work with my carpet I have tried many times. so any knowlegde you can give would be fantastic
