From an evolutionary perspective it sort of makes sense that people who were deathly afraid of snakes more often survived and had more offspring than those people that didn't fear snakes at all, leaving us (their descendants) more likely to fear them than not even though it may not be a genetic trait I'm talking about.

We didn't always have access to the knowledge of which snakes were venomous and which weren't so those who decided to avoid being bitten by ANY snake probably tended to live longer and were likely smarter all around so who knows, it may have a genetic basis afterall.

So it's not about how much a corn snake bite hurts because most other pets will have a much worse bite. I think it's just a remnant survival strategy from our distant past.
