That comes from a very handy book "A Field Guide to Reptiles and the Law" (Second Edition). John P. Levell, 1997. Published by Serpent's Tale Natural History Book Distributers- 403 Parkway Ave. N. P.O. Box 405 Lanesboro, MN 55949 (507) 467-8734.

Most of the info in it is available if you dig far enough through state and federal codes, but it is a lot easier to find it all in one place. One flaw- laws do get changed, so it is always good to double check things before doing anything that might be a problem!

No doubt:-) Lots of other neat, small turtles out there! But then, you still need a permit for any of them in Maine, theoretically. Maybe consider not moving to Maine???

And maybe die? Don't mean to be so dramatic, I know you mean well. But there is no way in he!! that we could be able to stay here.

We will just stay out of keeping turtles and stick to snakes and possibly lizards.
