I forgot to ask ya, Chuck. Is that captive bred or was it collected?
Originally collected, but a very long term captive. Was caught by Mardi Snipes in south GA or so the story goes.

Wish I could find timbers that big where I go........ I think the biggest was around 5 ft so far.......
That is still a huge snake. That timber over to the left with my name on it is 5’, but she is thinker then this 6’ cane.

I have a bit of an interest in cane's since my very first bite came from one,
Well, you picked a nice one to start with. ha ha

it was one of the nicely neurotoxic populations
Dr Fry, I was under the impression that the hottest canes come from Jasper County, SC. 37% Neurotoxic is the hottest that I am familiar with. BW Smith mentioned to me that there was some brand new research showing canes in FL to be even hotter. Are you familiar with this research?

PS as a parenthetical aside, you guys have heard of the recent study that showed that there is basically zero diff genetically between canes and timbers.... basically, its all Crotalus horridus now and all are just clinal variants.
Yeah, we all heard it but calling them canes and timbers never went out of style here in the south. Are you following the research of Dr Gordon Schuett? He tells me that his research is showing enough genetic difference to at least reclassify the cane as Crotalus h. atricaudatus and possibly give them their own species Crotalus atricaudatus. He also feels when his research is complete the cottonmouth will be divided into two separate species.

HI mate

I'm not sure which populations are the hottest since a proper regional study hasn't been done yet in that regard (its more anecdotally based now which is still a start though). As funky as the neurotoxic bite was, I'd rather have gone through that than lost a finger!

As for Schuett's results, it'll be interesting to see how they compare to the genetics already published by the ICBR Genetics Lab at the University of Florida (which did a massive sampling). I look forward to seeing his paper.

All the best
B
