Re: Question

It appears my perception of common snake names is a bit skewed! I think that's probably because the only forums I've been on that use common names are American forums. It does seem that everywhere else uses scientific names, which is nice. I got a bit annoyed writing my recent post about my two new snakes because their common names are quite long and elsewhere they are often referred to by just the subspecies jani and lineaticollis(where the rest of the scientific names have already been stated prior, of course. It really made me consider changing my signature to all scientific names. I didn't want to confuse anyone, though.

Re: Question

I say if you want to use scientific names then go for it. Who knows maybe you will sway some members to follow you. I know I could certainly brush up on my Latin. Either side asking the other to do as they would like seems a bit needy to me. All it takes is a little internet search to clear up any confusion.

Re: Question

Personally I like seeing both common and scientific name. It makes recognizing the Latin name in the future much easier,to me at least. It's that visual cue, almost like a flash card or study sheet. I think of the common name as the question and the Latin name as the answer. Now if it's one animal in the thread, looking up the Latin name isn't so bad. But once it becomes several animals, or even several pages of animals, it becomes a chore and difficult to remember if your forced to look them all up. I figure it's easier for me to post both names, than to have every person that reads my post blowing up the search engines.
