Re: Snakes in our yards

I've only ever seen garters and milk snakes on people's lawns. More species when "snake hunting" though.

Re: Snakes in our yards

When I used to live at home with my parents I saw the odd herp on the property.

Milk Snakes
Garter Snakes
Red-Belly Snakes
Leopard Frogs
Green Frogs
Bullfrogs
American Toads
Spring Peepers or Grey Treefrogs if I was really lucky.

Reminds me - when I was a kid this big old toad showed up in our storage shed after we mowed the lawn one day. (Dirt floor, full of shovels, lawn mowers, and woodlice. Toads loved that place)

The toes were sheared right off his hind foot. Somehow the lawnmower left the rest of him unscathed. I took him to the tap outside our house, washed his foot off, then put him back where I found him in the shed. The next day I went back out, he was still there, and I took him and washed his foot again. I did this faithfully every day until his foot healed. All summer he stayed in the shed, and almost every day I would go hunting for bugs toss them in front of him and he'd eat like crazy. I named him Toadie. He eventually got so used to me he wouldn't puff up or pee on me anymore. The next YEAR summer came, Toadie was back in the shed! I was so excited. I can't remember if he stuck around for 2 or 3 years.

Great experience from my childhood. I felt so proud that I looked after that toad.
I have a photo of him in an album somewhere that I took with a 35mm camera my Grandma gave me.

Re: Snakes in our yards

So far, in the past 5 yrs I've lived at this residence [Lower Alabama, in a somewhat developed area, but not in the city limits], here are the species I've encountered:

black racer [2 occasions and several molts]
speckled kingsnake
gray ratsnake [3 occasions]
scarlet snake'
eastern garter snake

eastern fence lizard [seasonal commune]
5-lined or possibly broad-head skink [all I see are juveniles with blue-tails]
green anole [only once]
small unknown mole skink [or coal skink]
Mediterranean geckos

eastern box turtles
gopher tortoise
