Giant waxy monkey tree frog

I just recently discovered these whacky amazing frogs. Ive wanted to add a frog for quite some time. the care sheets online are quite lacking. So far I have found that unlike most amphibians they prefer basking temps in the mid to high 80's. As well they like high humidity but to remain relativly dry themselves. This is the issue Im struggling with. With them not liking to be sprayed a misting system isnt an option. So what would be the best way to maintain high humidity without regular misting?

Re: Giant waxy monkey tree frog

Keep them the same you would a White's tree frog. Nice big water dish, live plants, and screen top. Keeps a humid microclimate at the bottom of the tank and a hotter dry area at the top.

And please post pics when you get some, I like looking at those guys.

Re: Giant waxy monkey tree frog

Oh I will for sure Right now Im trying to track down a supplier but as soon as I find one there will be one on its way.
Im thinking That I want to a natural looking display tank. I want to have a water feature on one side at the bottom with a little stream flowing from the other side. It will have a good height as well with lots of branches and broad leaves for it to bask on. hopefully that will maintain the required humidity with the flowing water.

Re: Giant waxy monkey tree frog

It isn't what I consider to be good looking but this is my White's tank, I think that something like this would work for you. The base is two 10 gallon tanks, one is all water, the other has soil and the bulk of a pothos. I flipped the hood around in one shot to show my light/heat. The CHE is always on, the light is on a 12 hour timer.

Re: Giant waxy monkey tree frog

Well my whacky little friend arrived today. Finally!!! I snapped this quick pic in the container it came in. I'll get more later once it's in its forever home.

This particular specimen is captive bred. Which is extremely hard to find. I believe that it's male but it's hard to be sure at this size and age so time will tell.

Re: Giant waxy monkey tree frog

I did the one pic on my finger for a size reference. I've never been big on amphibians but I think if you're going to have just 1 this is definitely it!

Cool addition rep! Are you housing him in a standard glass enclosure? If so, consider the "versa top" glass cover to help with the humidity.

Re: Giant waxy monkey tree frog

I think that you're size reference pic didn't load, but that's a good looking frog.

What are you planning to feed him? If he's got a strong enough food response then I recommend tong feeding; it is fun to have frogs that sit out in the open looking for food.

Re: Giant waxy monkey tree frog

Pretty cool, does he/she feel dry when you handle it or is it more like a standard frog and a little wet?

Re: Giant waxy monkey tree frog

He does feel wet like most frogs but will loose that as he matures. He's feeding on crickets and I am tong feeding him. I'm keeping him in an exo terra with 75% of the lid sealed off so it's retaining the humidity nicely. However I am misting him twice a day as well.

Lastly here's the size reference pic that didn't upload for some reason.

Holy crap how do you pick him up without squishing him? Cool looking addition though.
