I'm new to this...

Hi all

I've recently acquired a breeding adult pair of Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons. I've never had snakes before. The male is quite nice but the female is viscious. Advice on taming and handling would be greatly appreciated!!

Some will calm down and tolerate handling and some won't. Its really an individual characteristic. You can try frequent handling starting from short periods of time (5 minutes) and extending it as the snake calms but you just may have a bitey female...

People have been recommending putting a piece of your clothing with your scent on it, might help might not.

I'd invest in a snake hook.

Hi Misshrooms! Welcome! Can you describe what you mean as viscious? I have to be honest-- from no snakes to an adult pair of carpet pythons is a huge leap. Have you had reptiles or other sorts of exotics before -- or is this your first time around a non-furry critter? I guess before offering any sort of advice, it would be nice to know what your frame of reference is.

Hi all, thanks for the warm welcome! I have had reptiles in the past. Nothing as big, only geckos and my 10 yr RES. This really is a huge leap. My poor husband mutters "what did you get us into??"

The female was hissing and posed to strike any time we came near her enclosure. I tried to manover her once with a hook after she found the one spot she could escape from and she broke the collapsible hook. We now have a solid steel one and my husband learned very quickly how to handle the snake. He was struck at but lucky it turned out to be a head butt. She has since calmed down some, now that she's heated and has a hide. I haven't tried to handle her since but I do have my hands in the tank, adding bulbs and doing stuff. She hasnt tried to attack so maybe she was just really stressed as suggested. Now I also need to convince them to switch to F/T. They're sooooo beautiful but I really didn't think before getting us into this.

It sounds like she was freaked out from the move. Time will really tell. Now is the time to study your arse off and really research everything you can about care for them. Best of luck!!

If in a week or 2 the snake is still aggressive I doubt it will ever change. But my recued female jcp was going to eat my face when I brought her home and now is quite calm. Each is unique.
