I think there's more than one impulse behind the need to touch.

One is the need to touch or feel something attractive or in your possession. There is a need to make it tangible.

The other impulse is driven more by adrenaline. The quickening of the heart, the shallow breath, the rush you get when you reach out and put yourself in danger for an instant, and the feeling that follows as the endorphins flood your system once you have retreated safely. Some people get addicted to it, and become freeclimbers, basejumpers, or... hot handlers

I think it may be an inate desire in all humans (as well as animals) to Want to be able to touch or pisk up something you own (especially if you paid a lot for the item). Givin that a diamond can't bite and kill you, but how many know someone who has spent $6,000 on a beautiful diamond yet has no desire to touch it at some point??? To me venomous snakes )most, anyway) are some of the most beautiful snakes in the world, and some are quite costly. So I don't believe you are a sicko if you have inside desire to touch or want to hold your hot snake. Obviously doing so is not a good idea for you or the snake. It puts your life (and maybe other peoples lives) in danger, and it stresses the snake. So if we have those urges, we should try to repress them.

Of course when I work with so many venomous snakes the opportunity presents itself to handle to some degree or another the snakes I unpack, care for, medicate, feed, cage clean, and pack for shipping. This does not mean that I walk around with a venomous snake in my hands all day (waiting for someone to come by with a camera so I can drive BW Smith to an early grave). For the record (regardless of what I may do) free handling venomous snakes is not wise, dangerous, and stressfull to the snake.
Peace
