I am terribly sorry to hear about your loss... I hadf to put my baby down not long ago, and it hurt tremendously.. this helped me through a little..
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks in the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never again to be parted. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

My condolences, I know exactly how you feel.
My 14 year old pointer died in her sleep about 6 months ago, and it still hurts quite a bit. She had cancer as well. And, in true form of German shorthaired pointers, she was stoic and reserved until the night she died.
It's too bad they just don't live longer. :/

Hey Joey, sorry to hear about your buddy, I know how you feel, we lost our sheppard/husky/collie cross to cancer last summer and we had the option of expensive and painful cancer treatment that would extend his life for 6 months to a year or meeting the inevitable result right away with out pain. Anyone that knows some one that has gone through chemo knows that the treatment is often worse then the disease and it isn't a cure. We couldn't do that to our friend regardless of the cost.
You did the right thing, no matter how much it hurts.

Lisa, that's exactly how it was for us. I couldn't imagine putting our 14 year old dog through that for just 6 more excruciatingly painful (for her) months. I'm surprised it's an option, to be honest.
We made the choice to put Star down in the evening, and she died in her sleep that night. I guess we were kind of lucky in that regard.
Short lives, but I don't think I'd trade it for anything.
