When they're smaller, they tend to get out of breath easy because of their hyperactivity, at least mine did (still does but whatever). As they get bigger, just regular non-elevated breathing will be audible.

As long as there's no mucus or irritation of the gums, you can pretty much safely assume the snake is fine.

I'm extremely glad this question was asked because I have yet to hear our guy sneeze or whistle, but I know once I would I'd be in instant panic and think the worst.
