I would think it's a snake specific sensitivity. I believe most snakes would take larger prey size like you mention but this snake in particular doesn't feel comfortable with it.
Also possible that while the snake was getting it down it felt vulnerable for whatever reason, or spooked by a person nearby and decided to give up to avoid a "predator".
