It appears my perception of common snake names is a bit skewed! I think that's probably because the only forums I've been on that use common names are American forums. It does seem that everywhere else uses scientific names, which is nice. I got a bit annoyed writing my recent post about my two new snakes because their common names are quite long and elsewhere they are often referred to by just the subspecies jani and lineaticollis(where the rest of the scientific names have already been stated prior, of course. It really made me consider changing my signature to all scientific names. I didn't want to confuse anyone, though.
