Second Pairing (2014 Season)

Last week Living Gems profiled the Ramses-Jasper pairing, which should produce some gorgeous outcrossed het hypo bullseyes this year.

This week, we are profiling the Prometheus-Spessartine pairing.

Prometheus
Prometheus is a September 2009 male with vibrant red color, and a friendly personality to boot. Now pushing five years old, this is his second attempt at breeding.

Below is a picture of him as a baby at eight months, taken the night of his arrival at LGR:

And here a picture of him during this year’s breeding season, aged four years and seven months:

Prometheus currently weighs 1881 grams.

Spessartine
Spessartine is an August 2009 female with electric reddish orange color. She is a half-sister to Almandine, the big reddish orange female who produced a vibrant litter of 20 last year with Scarface. As a teenager Spessartine went through a long period where she insisted on only mice, but is now a confirmed rat enthusiast. Now almost five years old, this is her second attempt at breeding.

Below is a picture of her as a baby at five months (partly out of focus, but amusing):

And here a picture of her at her most recent annual photo session, aged four years:

Spessartine currently weighs a whopping 2570 grams, making her (easily) the largest of our 2014 girls.

Activity
This is the second time Prometheus and Spessartine have been paired. The last attempt, in 2013, did not produce any results.

For this season, Prometheus and Spessartine were observed courting throughout January, with enclosure furniture knocked around one morning. Sperm plugs were found as late as March. She last shed on May 20. While I have seen no confirmed tail wraps, I’m hoping for some stunner reds toward the end of this year.

(And if not, I’ll split them up with new partners for next season.)

As always, thank you for reading.
