Update on Our Rodents
As most of you know, all our rats are now in the South Colony including 16.63 breeders, babies, preweaned, growouts and reserves. These rats total over 300. We are using 11 5-tub racks to house them and yet we are still having a hard time keeping up with demand. As of last night we got a reprieve from that as our wholesaler is overstocked, resulting in us being able to acquire a fresh influx of new rats. Between 50 weaners, 20 smalls, 10 mediums, 5 large and 22 jumbos, all of which were already sold before we even picked them up, not to mention an even bigger stock of frozen acquisitions, most of which were already sold, the pressure on our current stock has been somewhat relieved for now. This will allow us to build our stock to numbers that can more adequately serve the needs of this demand.
Our mice are also doing really well. Some of the breeder coplonies and all the growouts and acquisitions are at the South Colony now but the rest of the breeder colonies have yet to be moved. We use lab cages for them and once again, the demand is outstripping our ability to produce. Fortunately, one of our jumbo rat customers also breeds mice which he uses to help pay his feed bill. This supplements our supply so we're not so easily depleted as far as mice are concerned.
Our snakes are always fed because they take #1 priority from what we have. I feel good about this and this thread will be the start to continuing updates on what we do and how things are going. Any other rodent breeders feel free to chime in as you see fit.
