I swam with a pet skunk a while back, they just float and swim themselves around.

When I go trapping I never keep skunks, I release them alive. As long as you don't like a predator (straight at the target) and you never look anywhere close to their direction you can just walk right up to them and release them from the trap. They wont bite scratch or spray if they are playing dead or not threatened.
