Since I was not there, I can only assume.
In my observations with the baby garters, they got mouths full of bedding during the thrashing, and not before.
Last week we had a new member with a "thrashing" corn snake, I hated to reply to that one, because I was right and the snake was dead hours after the post was made.
I can't explain it, but once the snake rolls over on it's back and starts convulsing, it's too late to prevent death at that point.
The head rubbing could very well have been the onset of the dreaded thrashing part.
