Help me identify?

I'm not sure this is the correct section for this post and if it's not I apologize.

I found this little guy (or girl) outside my apartment tonight. He was sitting out on the side walk. I caught him and took a few pictures and then released him by the treeline. I didn't want him to get stepped on or get eaten by a dog or something.

I know he's non-venomous but I'm very curious to know what type of snake he is. I've looked up the snakes in my area and none of them seem to match him.

He was defensive at first but not aggressive at all. He was a really sweet little guy.

If anyone can help me identify this little fella I would really appreciate it
I live near the South Carolina/North Carolina border.
