INTRODUCING - EVE
Hello everyone:
Well today is a good day. Everyone meet EVE another female Emerald Tree Boa in my Emerald Collection that I obtained a few weeks back in a trade. Her history is short and most likely a wild caught that found its way to Alberta and then later to me. I have her in quarantine at a friend’s house now and she will be there for almost a year. She does not show any ill signs but has been rather hard to get her to try and eat. Easily being as thick as a Canadian quarter I thought to try her on everything from hopper mice to small rats (frozen thawed) but nothing worked. Tried day / night feeds and a few other options. But nothing worked. Although I try to avoid feeding live I really needed to know her possibilities and was only left with this as a final result. I left her alone in her cage with only substrate (paper towel) and her perches and 1 live fat mouse. No place for the mouse to hide. I then watched her for almost 28 minutes. The mouse could not reach her but EVE was watching the little guy and a few times she took a strike at him, but only missed. Now it was around 17 minutes and I though, hmmm will this even work. I thought to remove the mouse with my forceps. This is where things all changed. The moment I got the mouse by the tail and started lifting it a few inches of the base of the cage, a strike came and it was dead on in the neck area. But EVE decided to use the forceps as the back breaker for the mouse. As soon as she loosed up I removed the forceps and watched her eat and of course I got photos of the eating part.
I hope next feed will be frozen thawed now that she is this comfortable to eat. Crossing fingers at least.
Well enjoy the photos, I could not get her real color to well, but she is deep neon green with loads of white diamonds at the mid body to tail area. The 2nd photo on the 1 set collage, is pretty close to her color. Comparing her to my other Emeralds I think she is about 1.5 - 2 years old. Overall a really nice Emerald and proportional body to head size. Very shy but I hope the feeding will make her more alert on food. Because I really hate feeding live.
Well here is EVE.
Hope you enjoyed the history and photos.
Question and comments welcomed.
