Is your snake....DUMB?

I think my ball python is brain damaged. He has a big water bowl in his tank. When he puts his head in there to drink, on occasion he will forget he cant breather under water. So I see these air bubbles come out of his nose, and he shoots out of the water. If snakes can look shocked, he has that look on his face. I dont get it. I know they arent the smartest animals in the world, but to forget you have to breath air....I dunno, you would have though natural selection would have wiped these animals out long ago. Oh well. Just thought I would share.
