It depends. If you can get the light box set up perfectly, then you won't need a flash. That said, I usually prefer to use a diffused flash for effect. When done right, it creates a nice illuminating effect without bleaching out the whites.

My go-to lens for reptiles is a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L. If the lighting is properly set up, you can use a fast shutter speed and get a good depth of focus with f11-16.

Like most boas, she is a total buttercup. Out of all of the boas in my collection, there is only one specimens that requires a cautious approach, all the others are fairly mellow with the proper approach.
