Field Herping Newb...

I live in Central Indiana and I am trying to get into field herping but I'm not sure where to begin. When I say I don't know where to begin what I mean is that I am unsure of where I can (legally) go to find herps. For those of you who do any sort of regular field herping: where it you go to do this?... State parks, private land, public land, etc....? Like I said before, I am in central Indiana so my options are a little more limited then say Florida or Texas but I am confident there are is still plenty opportunity for a good time here.
