In spite of the monitor looking to be in quite good shape when you got him, it`s what happened previously that is most likely to have been the cause of his problems and untimely death.
I hope it hasn`t put you off keeping them, you put a lot of work into it beforehand, you deserve success.
I`m really sorry he died.
