Boy do I feel stupid....
Ok. The first thing I want to say is that for those of you who think your snake will never get out of it's enclosure, think again.
I, in my haste last night, forgot to clamp down ONE CORNER of Sophia's rubbermaid after doing a quick check on her, and what happened? You guessed it. She got out.
I probably wouldn't have even noticed, except today I was going to attempt to feed her (she has been fasting for about 3 months now). I first thought something was a little off when I noticed a small snake poop on top of my workbench this afternoon. So immediately I open Sophia's enclosure (noticing one side wasn't clamped), and sure enough, after flipping over some hides and checking under the newspaper I noticed she wasn't there. @#$%! What made me REALLY worry is that I also have 2 cats, and a building that doesn't allow reptiles. (I know I know, but spare me)
I live in a 2 bedroom apartment. The second bedroom functions as sort of a office/workbench/animal room. So you can imagine how much stuff is around. Immediately I think of all the possible ways she could get out of the apartment, and there is only one, and it's way on the other side of the apartment, so I started tearing apart the room. The closet is all full of crap, so I go through it all. Look through the drawers in the bedroom, around the computers, workbench, and under the radiator. Nothing. So I move to the family room. Start pulling books off shelves, looking under cushions, turning over furniture etc. Still nothing. Right about now I'm thinking this is all just a bad dream. So I walk back into the office, and just scan the room. Something I didn't check the first time, and never really notice is the little 2 drawer filing cabinet stuck over in the corner. Both drawers are just slightly ajar. Hmmmm..... So I go over and slowly open the top drawer. I get it about a quarter of the way open, and sure enough, I feel some Resistance. I'm immediate on my hands and knees trying to get my big melon into the drawer to look on top of the files to see what is impeding it. Sure enough, I see Sophia. Well, a very small part of her. I touch her and right away she starts to move away from me. So I start easing files out from under her and removing them from the drawer. By the time I got her out, I had 2 empty drawers, files all over the floor, and one snake in hand, which beside feeling a little cold, is no worse for wear.
Not seeing her in her enclosure was one of the most terrifying feelings I have ever had. Spare yourself all this grief and be sure to lock those snakes down!
