Hairy toes (Teratoscincus species)

Wouldn't you just love some hairy toes like these?

The fringes on the toes are an adaptation for living and walking on loose sand. They work similar to snow shoes by helping the gecko stay on top of the sand. Some other sand dwelling gecko species have webbed feet which work just as well. These geckos can safely live on loose sandy substrate. Species like leopard geckos have long thin toes and (relatively) strong large claws to walk and dig in hard packed or rocky ground.
