I am the proud owner of a gorgeous 3 year old female Honduran milk snake...and a resident of NYC. I would like to keep her if she is legal, which I believe she is.
If you aren't familiar with NYC's pet laws they are...lengthy. The section of the law I am navigating is
section 10 relating to illegal snakes:
"all venomous, mid-or rear-fanged, Duvernoy-glanded members of the family Colubridae, even if devenomized" are illegal.
Milk snakes are part of the Lampropeltini tribe, which is within the Colubridae family.
I have found very few resources regarding their Duvernoy-glands and teeth.
I would appreciate confirmation, add to, or disagree with my findings.
Honduran Milk Snakes:
DO NOT have Duvernoy-glands, according to a
scientific study, all bites from milk snakes did not trigger symptoms related to the effects of a bite from a duvernoy-glanded snake, such as a hognose.
DO NOT have fangs, but teeth. According to
live science they have teeth.
