Taiwanese Beauty rat snake, 2 footer

I have owned my first rat snake, I really was impressed with the Beauty rat snake. I was browsing kingsnake classifieds, then I found a guy who was selling off some of his snakes before going to college. She was a 2 foot lady, she was under his care for 4 months. Cbb 2014. I am enjoying her, she ate her first meal in my care yesterday. One thing I like about Beauty rat snakes is they don't require a hot basking spot or high humidity. I have read they like it in the mid 70sF with a 88F basking spot maximum.

I have only had her for two weeks, so I have not disturbed her to take better pictures; this was the first day I picked her up from the previous owner:

Great snake. I love mine, she's 6' and has a great temperament. Good luck with yours.

Thank you, it was impressive watching her climb the branch & fake plant I provided. I found some nice options for her when she gets to 6 feet like your Beauty.

Thanks, she is still hiding most of the day. Do they become more confident and come out of their hides as they grow?

I had a female that was always on the prowl, and a male that was always hanging around in sight. Can't remember them ever being shy or even using their hides as adults, as babies they did use them. After the female passed i sold the male, still a shame, imo one of the coolest colubrids.

Thanks for the reply. How old was the female when she died?

Re: Taiwanese Beauty rat snake, 2 footer

I had a male Taiwan beauty snake (Orthriophis taeniurus frisei) for nearly 19 years. When I got him he was already ca. 160 cm (> 5 ft.) and he grew up to ca. 220 cm (> 7 ft.). As Tsubaki already said, he was nearly always outside his hiding, often prowling his whole enclosure, up one branch and down another one. I would provide one hotspot for your snake, so it might have the chance to warm up and then move to a cooler place.

If your snake is hiding right now, it might need some more time to adjust to the new environment. Each snake will react in a different way to a new home. My first tiger ratsnake just disappeared and I didn’t see him for 2 months. From one day to the other he was out of hiding and from that day on always active. So you need a little patience.

You might want to check the enclosure, snakes don’t like open spaces, so probably add some structures like branches, plants or anything else to fill out the open space.

Unknown, estimated 8 years old. Died from being egg-bound.

Thanks for the reply. So I am guessing breeding a female is one way to help her to not become egg-bound?
