Unhappy Gator Crossed the Rainbow Bridge

I lost a gecko for the first time ever just the other day. It wasn't sudden. I have been expecting it for a while, even considered euthanasia since nothing was wrong with him according to the vet, he just...wasn't right. After a 4 year long battle of inconsistent eating, terrrible sheds, temper tantrums, and many scared of 'will today be the day?' He is finally resting without worry.

My delema is this...I can't just throw him in the trash and I'm a bit afraid to burry him because I'd be upset if something dug him up and ran off with him. So, for now, he's 'chilling' in my freezer.

What are some methods you use to deal with your pet once the end of their journy comes?

(Please note, he was a rescue and came to me sickly. By best estimation he was somewhere around 15 years old)

Re: Gator Crossed the Rainbow Bridge

I'm so sorry to hear this Mink.

I have buried many loved pet in my yard, we usually wrap them in a towel or sheet and for a gecko, a few feet down should be safe. Sometimes we even use a little cement to put over for a headstone.

Thanks guys. I am just happy he's not suffering.

I live in an apartment complex. Don't think they would be too happy about me digging up their lawn.

Re: Gator Crossed the Rainbow Bridge

I usually bury deceased pets in wood or cardboard boxes. Never had any problems with them being dug up. Another option would be cremation, or perhaps burial "at sea". I have in the past sent dead tarantulas down a nearby creek, wrapped in paper(so that it will disintegrate eventually in the water and not become floating trash), although a gecko might not decompose as neatly in water as tarantulas do.

Re: Gator Crossed the Rainbow Bridge

As prairiepanda said, cremation or burial at "sea" would also be a good option.

Well, I do live right next to a river....I'll give it more thought. He's not doing any harm in the freezer.

A friend of mine takes anything he looses to a taxidermist or you could also preserve it in formaldehyde

Re: Gator Crossed the Rainbow Bridge

I bury all pets and plant something on the grave (nothing fancy, just some $5-10 hardy small something from Lowe's or home Depot ). Makes me feel like they're going back into the cycle of things. I live in the city, and my back yard is made of cement, so I have to go to the nearest "woodsy" large park. Maybe it's a silly level of effort to go to, but it makes me feel good. Sorry for your loss, Mink.

Sorry for your loss Mink.
I would find a nice park or go to a forest and bury him near to a tree.

That's a great idea! My mom used to plant things over my gerbil graves(they were in her garden) but I never really thought of it that way. Next time I visit her, that garden will have a whole new meaning for me.

Re: Gator Crossed the Rainbow Bridge

Deep condolences Mink! I'm with Rattlehead on his suggestion about the parks. I have buried a couple of my pets in the past in public parks. I live in a big city and just make sure I go deep into the park near a tree to have the burial. Sorry.
