internal parasite in my male ETB

Hi every one

my male ETB has not been able to keep any food down for 4 months , he has been vomiting his mouse with in 3 days , at this point i have to force feed him to get any thing in him , i suspect it is internal parasite , I have been waiting for a poop to take to the vet but he has nothing in him to come out and the vet only gave me a antibiotic called " Ceftazidime " and told me it would help but will give me something better after he sees a poop, so i have decided to take care of it my self, I have been reading passed threads and I decided to use a product with fenbendazole , wile giving him his dose he pooped this out, what is it ?

I read that I should give him a second dose of "fenbendazole", but nothing on how long to wait till the second dose , can some one please tell me how long would be suggested for the second dose ?

I also wander if i should keep giving him the antibiotic shots since I gave him
fenbendazole ?

thanks for reading

Re: internal parasite in my male ETB

Well, fenbendazole is a common treatment for parasitic loads and by itself is a pretty safe medication to administer. It is effective against a lot of worms, roundworms, pinworms and several others. But it should be confirmed by fecal float of a stool sample by the vet. If he gave you a antibiotic you really should have just given that. The ceftiazam is for gastrointestinal infections and that is what the vet was trying to treat. I would let the vet know what I did and why and ask him what I should do. I believe the follow up dose of fenbendazole is given 1 week after the first. You should let the vet know of what you did. That is the only way to stay on track with the appropriate treatment for the bp. Forced feeding should be a last resort and if performed the animal will need a break to recover from the stress ,and the regurgitated episode. The regurgitated food should be bagged , zip locked and refrigerated to take in to the vet in place of a stool sample that can't be obtained.

Re: internal parasite in my male ETB

thanks for your reply, I just don't trust the one vet I have in my area , seems to try things with out really knowing what is up, always tells me that he never seen the snakes I need help with , that is why I do most of the research, he wont even hold them, it seems like he is scared of them....lol

be leave me the last thing I like to do is force feeding a snake but he has not eaten for over 4 months and started to look thin and the vets meds did not look like it was working it is just as stress full for me as it is on the snake to do so.

thanks again for the info for the second dose. should I wait some time before trying to feed him again after the first dose of fenbendazole ?

any idea what that thing is in his poop?

Re: internal parasite in my male ETB

Yes, you should wait. The other thing to do is to let him soak in a container that is large enough to house his whole body. Soak in warm water for about 40 minutes. Snakes absorb water through the cloaca as well as the skin underneath the scales. They also absorb it through respiration and the oral route. So by soaking you are giving another treatment and helping the dehydration. Stay in peace and not pieces. Remember snakes heal slowly due to their metabolic rate and it may not look like the medication is helping but it is !!!
