breeding veild chameleon's

hi i have a question ive had veild chameleons before 2 females i was not interested in breeding then thats why i got 2 females but now i am going to get a new pair 1.1 because one female died and the other is on her way they are both old for there age and have laid 6 clutches each and i was told if u got 2 veild chameleons and they had difrent fathers you could breed them and it would be safe it mite have been if they had difrent mothers is this true any help would be great

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question ... Do you mean the pair has different fathers, but the same mother?

If that's the case I wouldn't do it. In the States (not sure about here) the veiled has been weakened so much by inbreeding - so much so that it is not one of those commonly recommended for beginners anymore. Inbred veileds are being bred for feeders .... If we are going to keep animals in captivity I think we have an obligation to keep lines strong. Certainly you can improve the quality of animal through inbreeding IF you are going to follow through several generations and discard (either destroy, spay or not allow to be bred) any animals that are less than perfect. Very costly (no sales for several years to off set costs) and alot of work.

I know a few people in the States have been talking about developing a studbook for panthers to prevent inbreeding. I don't think any actual work on it has been done yet. Interesting idea, though.

i didnt mean the smae mother what it is is one of the mothers from another breeder had ofspring the female was grown up and bred with an unrelated male then it would be one of those babies but its ok i found an unrelated baby now im just gonna have to wait a litle longer better to be safe then sorry

We - for one - keep a stud book on all our chameleons, complete with pictures of the parents - if CB. If the animal is the offspring of WC animals, we cannot do this, of course.

We strongly recommend that folks don't buy pairs from the same seller unless you are sure they are unrelated. I don't know why people don't think about this - would you breed cat siblings?

A few years ago when we started with chameleons, we purchased 2 females ffrom a guy. Both females later died and we had necropsies performed. Both suffered from genetic defects. We sure learned a hard lesson. Now we get totally unrelated breeding stock and infuse with some WC for diversity of the gene pool. Hence - the detailed record keeping.

If you plan to purchase new veiled chameleons - be sure to ask the breeder about the parents - and grandparents! If they avoid the issue - I would avoid them. Just my $.02

i dont think anyone understood what i was saying because i never said anything about breeding siblings together what it was was a breeder i know had babies another breeder bought some females from her and then they bred with an unrelated male i would have been geting a male from the breeder who bought them of the other one and a female of the other and i trust the breeder im getting them from and im waiting an extra 3 weeks to get 2 totaly difrent bloodlines
