Exclamation Pinky too big?

Hi guys,

I own a beautiful cornsnake, her name's, Lumi, she's almost 7 month old (2 days from now). Last time I went to my local reptile pet shop to buy some pinkies (she has been eating two pinkies, every 7 days), an assistant of the owner told me to try another type of pinky, 2 times the size of a pinky but a little bit thicker he said to try to feed her one of those, he even gave it to me for free! Last week she finished the last two pinkies, and today was the day I fed her that bigger one. She ate it in 5 minutes more or less (normal), i'm just a bit worried if it was too big for her. Lumi's 15g, the last time I checked was 3 or 4 days ago. Should I change her back to 2 pinkies every 7 days?

Re: Pinky too big?

If she can take it and keep it down, I'd say you're good. =)

Probably she will need a little more time to digest it too, but I think it's gonna be ok.

From the picture she doesn't look like she's having too tough a time . I think you're good. I usually feed my young colubrids every 5 days until they turn 1, then I feed them every 7 days on average.

Re: Pinky too big?

Thank you guys! I just like to be sure i'm treating Lumi like she deserves. I think I'll keep with these bigger pinkies.

PS: I don't know the pinky's weight

Re: Pinky too big?

Only reason I asked the weight of the pinkie is because rule of thumb is food items at 10-15% of the snakes body weight. But she got it down and kept it down so should be good to go.

Re: Pinky too big?

It's a little hard to tell from the angle of the picture but that pinky looks ok.

By "different kind of pinky" should we assume that the store moved you from mouse pinky to rat pinky? (again, hard to tell but that would be bigger)

Rule of thumb is to feed a meal that is about the same size as the thickest part of your little guy.

A little smaller is what most ppl go for and a (very) little bit bigger is ok also. If he doesn't want to eat it because its too big, you will find it sitting there tomorrow! (a gift...for you!)

Just remember that when you feed the 'hefty' meals you might want a longer interval between meals.
