That is a great looking Snapping (Alligator snapping?) Turtle. May I see a picture with your turtles setup please?

He was sent down from heaven. Actually he was given to me as a near hatchling. He's from up north in South Dakota.

He's a Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) Take a look at post #337 for a look at the enclosure I have him in. The only change to that has been the filter box I installed which removed the pump from his living space. I had to do that as he liked to mess with it.

Tank continues to grow and is near 40 pounds. His attitude hasn't waivered one bit. Still the gentle turtle.

Cheap, thousands (or millions). They're in every freshwater pond, stream, and lake in the central US it seems. That said, they're not all tame like Tank, in fact, very few are. He's the exception that proves the rule it seems. By and large they don't make good pets.

Re: Growing Like a Weed

If the person is talking about monetary value of Tank, I'm pretty sure there is no amount of cash that could separate guido and this amazing turtle!

They get very large and require a good sized tank/tub and filtration system, and quite a lot of food. If given the proper (bigger is better) setup and you give the animal enough feeding/attention I think they make great pets!

Re: Growing Like a Weed

Have you ever consider on breeding him? I believe his inteligence is based on his genes so if you find other tame turtles sharing almost the same genes you might end up breeding tamer offsprings.

I have considered it but haven't acted on it. Not sure what effect breeding would have on his temperament. Wouldn't want to lose what I have with my boy. Hands on with a 40 pound male snapping turtle is pretty cool. Most captive turtles see humans and react with a feeding response. Tank sees me and reacts with a "come spend time with me" response. He wants hands on and close contact. Face to face is when he feels the most relaxed. More dog-like then snapping turtle like.

Re: Growing Like a Weed

Tank continues to grow and his docile attitude just gets better and better. His Spring "heat" has been interesting but not severe. Even during these times he want all the time he can get from me.
