you ask how to knock a rat out,if your snake takes a knocked out rat, then it should take a fresh killed rat,as a knocked out rat won't move around

the best way to stun or kill a rat,is to hold it by the body and give the back of the neck, right where it joins the head,a fast hard knock onto the edge of a table or shelf, how hard you hit it depends on, if you want to stun it,knock it out, or kill it

imo sticking a needle into a rats head and through the skull to kill it,imo is causing uneccessary pain and stress/suffering to the rat,the rat deserves to be killed/euthinised in the fastest pain/stress free way possible

cheers shaun

Re: Help?

It's probably not the fact of touching the rat, it's most likely breathing in the dander.

You could also have someone else feed the snake, maybe? You could just stay away from the rat or mouse or whatever. Just a suggestion. Best of luck to you

Re: Help?

I defiantly want the rodent to feel as little pain as possible, so I'll try smacking them on a table.

This is a bad idea, what if it isnt killed or stunned the first impact? You going to keep smacking it into the table?

Quickest easiest most humane way is to snap the neck like you would a chicken

Re: Help?

Is it possible you are actually allergic to the bedding?

I have seen some monster hamsters that would be roughly the size of a medium rat.

Re: Help?

I thought that at first so I switched bedding and it wasn't the problem. Yea that's about the size the local pet store sells, I think I'll try breeding some for feeders and see if my snake will eat them dead.

Re: Help?

if you only have the one snake, couldn't you just buy the rat/mouse the day you need it, and dump it into the enclosure? that way the rodent isn't around producing allergens, and you don't need to touch the rat.

You would have to be vigilant while your snake is killing the mouse/rat, and have a contingency plan if the snake refuses...
