Heating Questions

I have my little corn snake in a 10 gallon tank. I bought this under tank heater and stuck it under the tank with pads on the corners of the tank to lift it up a little. On top of the aspen bedding were the heater is placed it is about 103F. Is this too hot? Should I get some of that special carpet to place on top of the glass?

I also have about 1/5 of its log home on the side of the heater area and half of the paper towel tube resting on top of the heater area. The water bowl is on the other side of the tank. Is this fine?

Re: Heating Questions

You need a thermostat plain and simple. It controls the heat source.

Also go for hides that only have one opening. Sure the ground might be hot but with a log or tube the hot air just escapes the sides. You need something that will retain heat and humidity(should you choose to use it as a humid hide during shed)

Re: Heating Questions

I cut out the side of a shoebox and stapled it to one side of the log (:

Re: Heating Questions

103F is far to hot for a corn, as said, you need a thermostat

can you post a picture of your setup? couldnt really follow your description

but in the meantime, get a thermostat!

Re: Heating Questions

I offer 86f as the highest temp for my corns, unless the cage was huge and could offer low 70s i wouldnt give temps as hi as 100

Re: Heating Questions

I agree with the others that have suggested getting a thermostat. They make a world of difference. Before I got thermostats the warm side temps could range anywhere from 84-104F. Now I've got both my tanks set at 89F and don't ever have to worry about overheating. Good luck with your corn.

What thermostats would you recommend?

Post #24 (a different thread) from a few days ago has a few ideas:

You MUST have a thermostat...slow cooked corn is a bad thing.

Re: Heating Questions

I use hydrofarm t-stats. They're relatively inexpensive and they work well.

Cool! I place the temperature probes about 1 inch above the substrate on hot side of enclosure.

Great investment hutt. I placed my probe just under the substrate inside the warm hide.

I do the same thing...bury it just under the surface of the substrate inside the hide because the hide will hold the heat and make the temps rise...especially if it is humid...

Do your snakes hover? The probe should be wheree the snake is not in mid air
