Great work, should inspire some that are contemplating a first build.

The 3/4 door frame you are describing, do you mean having the frame on the top, bottom and outsides but not the sides that meet in the middle? If so.... ....could work out very well. Great idea Terranaut came up with too. Always fun working out the details and then seeing them come together.

If you use a good sturdy hinge system you may be ok on the side.
This is my simple build, for my simple Ball Python LOL

Next build will be for the Coastal, which is probably going to take me a long time to finish, but I plan to do an extremely in detail thread following it.

In regards to the doors, what you described in the bold is what I am looking for. For the issue of "door sag", I am hoping that with some decent hinges and the fact that 99% of the doors life will be spent closed and essentially resting on the substrate damn, the forces will be minimal enough not to cause any permanent deformation in the hinges. Paired with the fact that they should be relatively light weight (a bonus from removing the 4th frame side for viewing preference, is that it also removes the most influential moment, or bending force in the door).

Another design option could be to have the top and bottom frame portions gradually taper to a smaller thickness towards the middle of the viewing area.

(sorry I went to school for mechanical engineering and now work in a field of aerospace manufacturing, and this kind of stuff gets me excited LOL).

Re: First build - Ball Python enclosure

Took a lot longer than I had hoped for, but literally right after thanksgiving I came down with a wisdom tooth gum infection, followed by mono, followed by the holidays and followed by a cold.

Regardless lol finally finished, only thing left to do is order an acrylic U-channel to cover the gap where the doors meet.

And here's a Green Moray from the New England Aquarium and some of the snow we got awhile back... nothing compared to you Canadur folk tho

(I love my Optima too can't wait to get rid of the snow LOL)

Anyway, I will put some pics up once I move Apollo (my BP) into his new home. Still letting all the sealant vent out for now, probably give it another 3 weeks with the RHP running the third week to help cook out the last of the gases.

Re: First build - Ball Python enclosure

Thank you!

Thermostat is a VE-100 hooked up to a 80watt RBI RHP... heating done the right way

(EDIT: by "right way" I mean using a thermostat to control and monitor heat output)

Thanks everyone!

And Larry, I wish it came out a little more square and flush in certain areas but I am working with a very limited wood shop at the moment lol all of the cutting was done with a radial arm saw and table saw.

Made those chamfered edges interesting to do

Thanks!

Still airing it out for peace of mind ATM.

I just got into saltwater reef keeping, but down the road I plan to do a larger build for my coastal carpet.

Here are some pics with the lights on:

A lot more colors too, but I will most likely just leave it at about a 5000K color temp and utilize the red for night viewing.

Follow up in the next weeks once I have it set up and with its new home owner moved in!
