K I have something on my mind thats seriously bothering me and I would like some other peoples opinions.

Do you think it is wrong for a person to buy a reptile and then trade it or sell it so they can have a different one?

Now my opinion: I dont think there is anything wrong with it especially since Im not doing it to make profit. I can't afford to have all the herps I want and IM not really into the breeding ( I do have some things I would like to try breeding) so basically it costs me money to feed all my pets so I cant afford to buy everything I want and therefore cant have experience with different herps. So if theres something I want I trade off something I have so that I can have that particular pet. To me theres nothing wrong with it especially since Im not doing it to try and make a quick buck and most people I trade with are friends or alot become friends after we trade. Thats just my opinion, lets hear yours...

I guess it would depend on how attached you are to the animal and if you knew it was going to be taken care of properly. Over the summer I sold/traded a pair of Beardies that I owned for 2 years to a friend. I still think of them but am comforted by my confidence in my friends husbandry. So I guess I would say it is okay to trade away an animal as long as you can ensure that it is going to a good home.

I think you can asn should do whatever you want as long as the "Traders are well kept. and if you happen to make a profit thats all right too

...I find myself having mixed feelings about it...

Generally, Buying an animal then turnng around and selling and trading don't bother me, being the animal don't care who it's owner is. Being they don't have love cued into there main frame..
They just want to survive and reproduce the best way possible..

However, what does bother me is the stress the animal has, being shipped (moved about in any way), the new owners possible of being a complete moron when it comes to caring for herps, the fact that they have to keep on readjusting to new habitats and what ever else causing stress or harm to the animal.

When it comes to trading or shipping with a person you have confidence with then it's no big deal really, seeing how this hobby seems to be about money or show anyways..
As long as the animal is well cared for during the time its kept.. no worries..

I dont get any reptiles for the sole purpose of reselling or trading them if something comes along that i want then I offer something in trade I dont do it all the time and I never ship it is always local.

I would personally have a huge problem with it, all of my creatures are "for keeps". They are all well loved! I would have a really hard time trading any of them and would regret it and kick myself in the *** every day.

But what's right for me is not necessarily right for others, so for what ever reasons others have, I don't judge...

My snakes are my pets as well but I have traded.

Just recently I traded my stripe female. I really liked her, wanted to keep her but at the same time knew that all her babies would end up missing her beautiful coloriation because I have no suitable mate for her, and I didn't want another snake. So I traded her for a morph thats more compatable with my collection.

Sure I miss her, but I also enjoy my new snake, and he is treated as a pet. Its not always bad. Nor always good when trading.

I see no major problem with it, I bought two baby balls last spring because I got them as a deal together. I knew I only wanted one for the long run, but I kept them both to decide which one I wanted to keep. Then when I had decided, i traded the one for an awesome little corn snake and a bit of money. I didn't really make a profit from the deal, but I did end up getting the sweet little girl that I probably wouldnt have bought straight up

I agree with Andrea...if you don't care enough about it to keep it for it's lifetime, don't buy it in the first place

I have already traded an animal once only and swore to myself never to do that again!
The animal was traded because of my personnal ignorance, I hadn't done enough research on it in order to appreciate its true nature (it was a veiled cameleon). I kept it for only 3 weeks. I felt realy bad about trading it, but I didn't want to keep and animal I didn't like and probably would have not cared for it as wll as all my other herps on the long run. I traded it in for my savannah monitor (yes, I know, it's a radical change!! loll!!)
The cham had to adapt to a new environment because of me, and everyone knows how much stress can affaect them.
Since then, I have always thought twice before buying any animal, being full concious that I want to keep them for the rest of their life. I get extremely attached to all my animals, so I can't even imagine myself trading or selling any of them!
But that's just me, I have nothing against people who trade and sell their herps, even for profit. Everyone has their own way of seeing and doing things.

I agree that you should not get an animal if you don't plan to care for it for it's entire lifetime. However, things happen that sometimes make it problemmatic for a person to keep a reptile and I'd rather see the person give it up to someone who will take better care of it than keep it and neglect it. I can see the benefit to trading among friends because you get to have experience with more different species of animals, however I agree that stress is a factor to be seriously considered. It's probably better to just go over your friends house and spend time with the animal rather than trade back and forth so much. The main reason I would not trade my animals other than because I love them as if they were my own children, is that I would always wonder if they are being as well taken care of as when they were with me.

i understand that everyine gets attached to the animals they get, but as long as you make a really good effort to find a good home for it, and dont pawn it off on anybody, i dont see a problem with it.
....but, if it gets to the point that you are doing it like every week, then maybe it begins to be a problem, but as i said, find it a good home and as is well
