Costa Rican and Hogg Island Boas.

Are they both legal in the state of PA?

What size tank should I house a new born costa rican boa in? One of these guys wouldn't be my first snake, but if anyone could give me a run down on what conditions I should supply them with I'd appreciate it.

You start babies off in anything as long as you provide hides and decor for security. I would start off with a 15qt tub or 10 gallon tank

I started my Hogg in a Rubbermaid tub until it was about 2 and a half feet in length, then I moved it to its permanent 4x2x2 enclosure.

A 4x2x2 will be good for the life of the boa.

The temps for a Hogg should be slightly cooler at around 85-89f hot an 75-78 cool. My humidity right now is 60% that i bumb up a few notches during shed.

Also they are both completely legal in the "wonderful" state of Pennsylvania.

Hogg are very cool animals, good luck =]

Where did you learn the temperature requirements for the hogg island boa?

Most of the caresheets I've looked at reccommended hotspots of 90-95F.

There are many care sheets out there that have many differing views on this.

My take is that that the islands on which the boas inhabit are surrounded by the see resulting in cooler temperatures. That is one reason why herpetologists speculate that they darken in the day to absorb more sun light.

I have had my boa with those temps and I think he couldn't be healthier.

It's weird. When I read articles and care sheets online they say to give insular/dwarf boas higher temps but when I talk to actual keepers/breeders they recommend lower temperatures.

Just speculating but, since the snakes darken to absorb more sunlight in the cooler islands, doesn't that mean that the snakes are still trying to get to that warmer temperature? If you place them in an enclosure without any sunlight yet provide them with the same ambient temperatures as the islands, wouldn't they not be getting as warm as they should?

Thats not true necessarily. Yes coastal areas tend to have a bit cooler summer weather but the sea is water, water loses heat SLOWER than air, and the sea acts as a buffer. Coastal areas tend to have more stable temperatures from winter to summer, and from night to day (less fluctuation due to the sea).

Also, Australia is surrounded by water and it gets pretty hot there :P Proximity to the equator plays a more important role.

Males 5-6 feet females 5-7

They get heavier than BCI but stay around the same length. They also have a slower metabolism so they don't grow as fast.

I can't tell for sure maybe I just have an active specimen but my hogg cruises from around 12-3 then cruises again at around 8-11. My dum doesn't do that...
