Re: Very Large Anaconda
it looks like maybe it has been dead for quite a few days, based on the discoloration around the mouth, and how bloated it looks over its whole body. Regardless, it was clearly pretty big when it was alive as well.

Re: Very Large Anaconda
If it had been dead a couple of days the scales would be separated from each other due to gas building up in the abdominal cavity unless he is completely empty.

Re: Very Large Anaconda
Its got to be dead. Looks like some sort of knife in the background so probably been killed then had its pic taken. Still a whopper of a snake.

Re: Very Large Anaconda
Also could be a smaller person holding the head out for forced perspective. A common tactic.

I think you can see that a little bit on the snakes side close to where he's sitting.

Re: Very Large Anaconda
That is a huge snake though. Girth looks a little bloated or maybe a full stomach but the head is massive. Small person or not that snake is big no question about it. Not sure if it would be a record holder though. I wish all the giant snakes killed would have either been captured , or measured and recorded properly.

Once the snake is dead, it can be stretched to seem longer. Same with shed skins. Likewise, can't just cut off the head, because the snake could have just had an abnormally large head.
Better to leave the snake alive for more accurate measurement. But realistically, how are you going to do this with a wild (likely aggressive) 20-ft+ green anaconda? The snake isn't going to just lay out in a straight line, and it would take lots of manpower and precise use of a long tape measure to get accurate dimensions.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I wish the right people would find the true giants. Your right though, pictures and dead snakes aren't too reliable.

Re: Very Large Anaconda
Some people have tried. But I will concur that, while likely not a record-breaker, the snake in the photo is definitely a big one.

Easy. Use a string, put it along the animal's length, then just measure the string. You might be off by a couple inches but..
