Depends on what temps you require.

Well what are your basking temps at now? I use a 50 watt flood bulb and a basking spot much higher then you read on care sheets for my snakes.

Re: 50w or 75w basking light?

I have a 75 watt red lamp which gets me basking temps of about 90 degrees on the warm spots, also in a 40 gallon long, about 18 inches depth. on my tank 19th only 16 inch depth, I have to keep the red bulb elevated off of the screen or the temps are too high. I have not ever used a 50 watt, but i may try it next time one burns out.

Re: 50w or 75w basking light?

I use two 75w regular bulbs for my retic. My room is a bit cooler than the rest of the house, so two bulbs help achieve my desired temp.

Re: 50w or 75w basking light?

I was using a 75watt in the winter, but have gone to a 50watt now that it's getting warmer in the house. I also use a thermostat for both the heatpad and the light. I strongly suggest a thermostat if you don't have one yet.
