Snake's Alive! Deadly cobra mailed to songwriter

Pretty scary.

Snake's Alive! Deadly cobra mailed to songwriter

Los Angeles Times

LOS ANGELES -- The spitting cobra seemed anxious to end its travels through the U.S. postal system.

Stuffed in a foam-filled box, the 2-foot-long South African snake, one of the deadliest in the world, stuck out its head, ready to greet the unsuspecting man who received the venomous package last week at his home, authorities said.

An investigation continued Tuesday as Los Angeles police tried to determine where the blackneck spitting cobra was mailed from and why it was sent to Joseff Calhoun, the 30-year-old Los Angeles songwriter who trapped the slithering interloper by quickly closing the lid. Calhoun escaped without injury and notified authorities.

Calhoun told police he had no idea why anyone would mail him a reptile; police said the culprit, if found, could be charged with attempted murder.

"The snake was not random," said Detective Rick Swanston of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley division. "Either someone was trying to kill (Calhoun), or hurt him or send him a message."

Deputy Chief Ronald Bergmann, the Valley Bureau's commander, said authorities are also looking into a connection with Death Row Records, a label that helped launch such hard-core rappers as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg into commercial successes. Its controversial co-founder is the recently jailed Marion "Suge" Knight, the focus of a six-year federal racketeering probe in which the government investigated Knight's alleged ties to street gangs, drug-running, money laundering and violent acts.

Bergmann said Calhoun received a threatening letter in November, but he declined to give further details about it or a Death Row connection.

Calhoun could not be reached for comment Tuesday. His attorney said the letter was vague but frightening. "It said something to the effect of, 'I'm coming to get you. Bang, bang,' " said Malanie Baghdaian . "It was very simple and very disturbing."

Prior to the November letter, Baghdaian said Calhoun had received another threat on his life, though Baghdaian said she did not know the specifics. Her client, she said, had told her he does not know who might want to harm him.

Initially, Calhoun had planned to speak Tuesday at a police station news conference but canceled it at his attorney's suggestion.

"He is pretty nervous," Baghdaian said. "He's happy he was smart enough to close the lid on the box."

Neither Baghdaian nor her client believes a connection exists between the cobra and Death Row Records, now known as Tha Row. "It doesn't make sense," said Baghdaian, while saying she does not know the specifics of Calhoun's music dealings or if he had worked with the label.

A spokesman for Tha Row Records said the label is unaware of the songwriter and has no knowledge of a cobra connection. Authorities, meanwhile, euthanized the reptile Tuesday morning at the Los Angeles Zoo.

The decision to kill the cobra was based on the reptile's dangerous nature coupled with an inadequate place to house it, Russ Smith, the zoo's reptile curator, said. A tumor was also found on its face, he said.

California law prohibits people from owning venomous animals without a permit from the state Fish and Game Department. Authorities, however, said a cobra or other creature can be obtained for less than $100 from reptile dealers, often found on the Internet.

The blackneck spitting cobra is usually dark with a pinkish belly and eats rodents, birds and other reptiles. It spews venom that can irritate human eyes, even causing partial blindness. Its bite is often fatal.

Throughout its ordeal, the snake seemed angry, Smith said. Indeed, Calhoun was lucky to escape the riled reptile.

"One of the first things this kind of cobra does when it's angry is rear its head, raise its hood into a wide band and spit venom," Smith said.

I think that many are missing the severe implications that this may have for the hobby, particularly the hot keepers. There has been enoughbad press about "buying poisonous snakes of the web". Not to mention the fact that now snakes are being drilled into uneducated minds as "lethal weapons". It puts bad press on us all. So far I have seen (here and on other forums) jokes about it (that is fine in aherp forum), arguments against the police for killing the snake, and arguments why they had to kill it. i have seen nothing about the press this is giving us as a community. I am still hearing about the Burm killing that kid. How long do you think this is going to last? I would not be the leas bit suprised to see tighter regulations on shipping herps because of this just to make the public "feel safer". The HSUS is chewing at the bit to BAN ALL HERPS in the US. And this just gives them more ammunition. They already twist Salmonilla stats to fit their agenda. They take any case of it and if there is a herp in the house or they visited a pet shop, it is fromt he herp. how are they going to turn this against us? Let's face it, snakes are probably the most misunderstood and persecuted animals in the world. And now people are using thema s weapons and indimidation tactics. This is not good for us. But I will step off my soapbox as i have no solution, just bringing some points to ponder.

Your Militant Herper,

BW great post. ive said it so many times b4, but back in england there are no reptile shows, reptile keeping is being systematically phased out by the rspca. they are told nonsense by a group called animal aid. their main agenda is to ban ALL pets not just reptiles. but they stat with reptiles to get public support.
cheers
paul

I think its in ppl nature to try to ban or destroy something they don't understad.. like the repile hobby for example.. whenever theres a bad apple, the'll make sur its seen everywheree..

Its unfortunate but thats how things work..

All I feel I can do .. is laugh about it because these type of things will always keep happening..

Ters bad keepers everywhere and unfortunetly we suffer because of them..

I agree that this is bad for the hobby but I like to look at the silver lining to the fear through misunderstanding of reptiles. At least now there are plenty of great educational programs on television that lots of people, even non herpers, tune into. Hopefully things like this will help curb some of the misunderstandings about reptiles and prevent such banning actions from going through. (I probably opened a huge can of mealworms from this post but whatever bring it on. )

Meh I have more thoughts so I'll go on. I saw something once on Animal Planet or maybe the discovery channel on "dangerous snakes". The show basically said that with most venemous snakes (if approached in the wild) it's only when people try to pick up the snake that accidents happen. They showed a range of species and the person on the show went as far as to step on the snakes body with out any attack from the snake (except for one species that had more of a reaction to being stepped on). I know nothing about hots but it really opened my eyes and reduced most of the fear I have of them. So now I feel that if I encounted one in the wild that I wouldn't have to feel nervous about it if I didn't try to touch it.

I guess what I am saying is as much as this gives us bad press (probably far more outweighing the education that is out there) there is a lot more opportunities to be educated about reptiles than there used to be. If you think of the generation that is growing up now, in general the fear of reptiles will be fairly well eliminated since they are growing up watching these shows as well as learning much more about them as they become more incorporated into school curriculums. My hope is that even if reptiles were ever banned by the US government, by the time the youngest generations are in office, the silly ban would be repealed. Wishful thinking, perhaps.

The show you are referring to (at least that segment) is Whit Gibbins at the SREL. That guy has Mojo! Snakes flat out will not bite him. He actually said the Cottonmouth was one of the most docile venomous snakes in the US. I tend to disagree. But not only that program, but when we see on TV people casually handling venomous snakes it implies that it is easy to do. The herp community has omre enimies than there are stars and they are in every direction. I think hte most damaging thing is when someone who thinks they are helping the herp cause hurts it. Everything gets a twist. If it suits their purpose, the media can make any of look anyway they want. If you say something that can be construed as damaaging to our hobby, you are a "preffessional" if you try to make valid points and argue them, you are an "amateur" snake keeper. Who knows what to do. The best thing we can do is police ourselves and remember that everything we do refelcts on everyone.

That's true and I see your point but my main point was that there is at least more information to be found than there used to be. It's up to common sense to know you should just pick up any snake you feel like because someone does it on TV. That's why I liked that show because he basically said, if you pick it up, your gonna get bit.

Hey guys, I am totally feeling what you guys are saying. However, as a community, we need to stop bitching and complaining and do something about it! Seriously guys they can't take away what we love from us, it justwouldnt be right. And to sit here and let them, well what does that say. Me, I have not done anything big yet, however even the small things help. I am currently planning on doing shows at schools informing them about reptiles, mostly snakes as they are the most critisized.
