Help with caught snake

Hi, I am not a snake person but felt sorry for this little guy I found while clearing up my lawn earlier. As far as I can tell he is some type of rat snake. Anyway, I caught him in a plastic container and put some holes in the lid. I want to release him in a more wooded area away from homes but it got dark/cold and I would rather do it tomorrow during the day. Will he be fine in this makeshift cage in the meantime? Do I need to do anything else? I just don't want him to die while I'm trying to help him out.
